Rational Choice Theory will be used to frame this module. The operating assumption is most users of social media unknowingly post personal information, information about people around them and employers without realizing they are doing it and this information could be accessed by malicious users.  We employ rational choice theory where humans are thought of as logical actors who will make rational decisions when they are cognizant of potential consequences of their actions. More formally Rational Choice Theory is defined human beings are seen as actors whose action is undertaken to achieve objectives that are consistent with an actor’s preference hierarchy (Ritzer, 417).  The operating assumption is that when we see the costs of presenting personal, family, and employment information on social media we will change our presentation to maintain confidentiality because in our preference hierarchy we prefer not to be victims of identity theft and scammers.
